Wish for The Ultimate Forecasting Machine
What I am about to write might be considered odd to some of you (who might just read this article anyway :P)A thought struck me when reading events that are happening in this precious world of ours. The chicken influenza pandemic in Asia, snowstorm in Northeast USA and France (which usually never has snow), earthquake in Bam, Iran, on and on. Perhaps, just perhaps, if we can build a powerful enough mainframe (or computing power), we can somehow input all these events, mark the time of start and end of those events, relate them in an intricate matrices and attempt to extrapolate all these data and hope to come up with a general mathematical formula, like the one Einstein created for General Theory of Relativity (whoa, I am getting way ahead of myself here!)This formula can in turn be used to "predict" events in the future, a methodical crystal ball sort of speak. We can probably come up with some type of probability of an even to likely happen, thus helping mankind to have an insight and prepare for the probable event.Far fetched? Hmm.....perhaps now. But I do not see this as something impossible. Japan government now has a super computer that is able to calculate and simulate weather patterns in the world. With the development of new materials to replace silicon based chips (nanotechnology, bioelectric materials, how about Moon or Mars minerals?), there should be time when this sort of attempt will probably be successful (well, unfortunately not in my lifetime perhaps).
Ebbs and flows of life seems to be unpredictable from where we see at the moment, but with good observation, via help from science and technology, we can probably bring more predictability to the equation of life on Earth. Next attempt is to come up with the same method for our solar system, galaxy, etc. :) But that would have to wait at least another 50,000 years. No one thought we could accomplish what we can accomplish now, 100 years ago.
