Why The Pyramid Shape?

I wonder why the shape of pyramids exist in all forms of ancient civilizations actually. The ancient Mayans, Eyptians, Sumerians, even the Chinese have pyramids in one form or another.

What is it about the shape of pyramids that are somehow being followed by all those ancient civilizations? I am almost certain, at least from reading contemporary history books that there was no contact or exchange of information amongst these ancient beings, yet, they all shared the same ideas with regard to building a pyramid shaped buildings. It was such an amazement when I entered one of them on my visit to Egypt, I just found the engineering of the place to be precise, requiring very good knowledge of civil, structural engineering and mathematics.

Unfortunately, these are mysteries which the current civilization might never find an answer for actually. These buildings that were left over has been, and will always be, a subject for all of us to ponder and understand our position in this world.
